Two Faces of Egypt: Earthy Beladi & Classic Golden Era Styles
From the people’s dance to the glamour of the stage, this workshop covers skills, cultural context and combinations for both the soulful Beladi style from rural Egypt and the elegant, quintessentially feminine style of stars such as Samia Gamal, Tahia Carioca and Souheir Zaki. Style-specific skills and movements will be thoroughly broken down and drilled.
Workshop #2: 3-4:30 p.m. Sunday January 15
Bringing Folkloric Elements to Cabaret Performances
Many pieces of music written specifically for bellydance performance have short sections that reference specific folkloric styles. The smart dancers use them to bring variety and authenticity to the show. We will get acquainted with some folkloric styles and work with examples of their occurrence within cabaret bellydance music.
Early Bird Special: both workshops $45 when registered by December 18!
Pre-registration: One workshop $30, both workshops $55
At the door: One workshop $35, both workshops $65
Comments from Mahin’s Workshop Students…
“I've attended 2 of Mahin's workshops, both in VA Beach, and loved every moment! She explains the moves and tells about belly dance history and keeps us moving the whole time! I learned so much at both, but my favorite has been the Drum Solo improv Workshop! Such wonderful ideas to use for improv!” Melissa L., Danville, VA
“Previous to taking this workshop, I had been concerned that I wasn't yet ‘good enough’ to take one. Mahin did an excellent job creating a supportive learning environment and meeting every participant at their instructional level. I wish I had done a workshop with her a year ago!” Katherine H. , Philadelphia, PA
“I took your class in VA Beach last month and loved loved loved it! It was so worth my 1.5 hrs to get there. Your techniques stuck with me. Sometimes I attend workshops and leave forgetting what I learned but with your style of teaching I am remembering and applying what I learned! Thanks, Mahin and I am looking forward to you coming back to my area.” Anita S., Emporia, VA
“Mahin combines a wealth of knowledge with a sparkling personality to create workshops that are fun and informative. She ensures everyone from the beginner to the advanced student has a fulfilling workshop experience. I could study with her again and again and just skim the surface of what she has to offer.” Tara K., Durango, CO
An experienced and professional belly dance instructor and performer, Mahin is known worldwide as the author of the internationally acclaimed “Daily Bellydance Quickies.” A captivating performer, her deep love of Arabic music shows through her dance which is rich with musicality and classical technique. She is widely regarded as an exceptional zill (finger cymbal) player with a very musical and creative playing style.
As a dance educator, Mahin combines her training and experience in the art of Middle Eastern dance with a formal education in the science of body mechanics and movement. She holds a B.S. with Honors from Arizona State University in Exercise and Wellness and is an ACSM Certified Personal Trainer. She blends art and science to provide high quality instruction to her students in workshops nationally and in weekly classes in Phoenix, Arizona where she is based.
Mahin’s dance career has been a lifetime in the making – she began her dance training at age 3 with the childhood standards of ballet and tap. She moved on to modern and lyrical styles as a teen and finally found her “perfect fit” in belly dance as adult. Her love affair with belly dance began long before she actually had the opportunity to study this gorgeous dance. She attended many performances growing up and was fond of taking the pink chiffon curtains off her canopy bed as a child, flitting around the living room to her mother’s “Eddie the Sheik” LP’s.
Mahin’s motto is “In the ears, out the hips” and she believes this is the soul of Arabic dance. The dancer is the channel through which the beauty of the music is made visible. Mahin’s life-long passion for belly dance and the folkloric styles of the Middle East and her great joy in sharing it are the source that fuels her exquisite performances and drives her genuine and engaging teaching style.
