Event description

Description

You are invited to grab your mountain bike and join us Calgary Olympic Park. We are hosting the Bell Joy Ride right here in Calgary, Alberta! Joy Ride is about getting women of all abilities together on our mountain bikes. We are hosting rides and building community! Whether you are looking to gain confidence on your mountain bike or ride with amazing people, we are focusing on the women in our community. We are switching it up and hosting at the Calgary Olympic Park in Calgary, Alberta. This is a downhill resort with lift access. Winsport has generously agreed to sponsor PART of the event and this is your chance to experience an awesome discipline of cycling: downhill riding. Cost is dependant on how many people come.

https://www.winsport.ca/

PLEASE REGISTER WITH COMMITMENT. This trip has cost associated to it and we need you to mean it :)

PLEASE NOTE you are responsible for vetting the the bike you choose to bring and ensure it will do what you need it to do. If you think your bike will struggle, please consider renting at the hill.

This requires a commute to Calgary. We are NOT going to organize the drive down, but I suspect many of you will have room for an extra bike. To save on gas and offer those without bike racks an opportunity, let's see if we can carpool.

For those that want to rent a bike, Winsport has this option for you. It is not covered but you can rent bike and gear for downhill riding!! So yes, you can bring a friend!

Event Details

11:00am meet at the front of the Calgary Olympic Park Reception; waivers, swag etc

11:30am Ride - NOTE - you do not have to ride with the group. You are welcome to ride at your level. I will ride with the beginners for a few runs to help everyone gain confidence but you are NOT required to commit to anything formal.

There is no formal end time. I have the intention of riding at Bragg Creek the Sunday. You are welcome to join me. These are cross country trails and I suspect we will have a great time. Please message me for details.

FAQs

How is downhill different from cross country

Basically, you don't pedal. There is a lift that carries you and your bike to the top of the hill and you ride down. There are bigger, tougher bikes, with more slack in the head tube that offer confidence but the COP is pretty tame and you should be ok on the average mountain bike that is kept in good working order. You also have the option of renting a bike.

Is this for beginners

I did start mountain biking on a downhill bike, but you may find this a challenge. Please respect your boundaries. The key is to find the balance between limitations and bravery. That being said, this is an easier hill and they do have green runs. If you have experience with downhill skiing, this is akin to the sport.

What should I bring?

  • CSA approved Helmet is required to ride with Joy Ride.
  • A bike in good repair with a bell (it is the law)!
  • Valid ID – we need you to carry identification and cell phones are always recommended
  • Water and snacks to bring on the trail (plan for 1.5-2.5 hours depending on group level).
  • It is HIGHLY recommended you bring an extra tube for your bike, as well as a bike tool and bike tire levers. This is a no drop ride and we will help you as much as possible if you have a mechanical issue. It is good practice to be self-sufficient.
  • Cycling shoes are good to have – but, at a minimum, closed toed shoes are mandatory – running shoes will work. NO SANDLES
  • Gloves and glasses are highly recommended for protecting your hands and your eyes.

What kind of bike do I need?

You will need a bike (in good working order) that can go on our river valley trails. If you are unsure if your bike is capable, please email your bike make and model to belljoyrideedmontonab@gmail.com.

Where can I contact the organizer with any questions?

If you have any other questions, please email us at belljoyrideedmontonab@gmail.com.

What are the ride levels?

1> Intro - sorry. No gravel on this ride.

2 > Beginners

Let's ride the first few runs together. I will show you how to load your bike on the lift and we can ride a bit to show you the runs you might want to consider.

3/4 > Intermediate/Advanced
I hope to see you on the hill! I am sure we will bump into each other!
