Description

TRS Beit Midrash (House of Study) – Winter 2019
a community of adult learners deepening connection and meaning

For our Winter Beit Midrash, we are offering one phenomenal 3-session course embracing themes of culture, history, social action and Israel:

Leonard Bernstein: The Power of Music

Celebrate Bernstein at 100 with guest presenter Ivy Weingram, curator of the Leonard Bernstein: The Power of Music exhibit for the National Museum of American Jewish History in Philadelphia. Through pictures, music and video, Ivy will explore ways in which Bernstein was influenced by Judaism and how themes of faith and social justice permeate his music.

Thursday evenings January 24, 31 and February 7

Gather at 6:15 pm for soup, salad and sandwiches (yummy), class is from 7:00 -8:30 pm
Cost is only $36 for members and $54 for non-members for our 3-session course.

co-sponsored by the Adult Education and Music & Performing Arts committees

Session 1: Leonard Bernstein’s Jewish Roots
We will explore Bernstein’s Jewish identity from his youth at Congregation Mishkan Tefila, and how the synagogue music he heard informed the kind of composer he became.

Session 2: Leonard Bernstein, Social Activist
We will trace Bernstein’s early interest in social activism and political causes from his college days through the end of his life. We will pay particular attention to how his social progressivism expressed itself in On the Town and the consequences he faced for his outspokenness during the Cold War, and continuing through the Vietnam Era and beyond.

Session 3: Leonard Bernstein at 100, Israel at 70
We will focus on Bernstein’s commitment to the State of Israel and its orchestra, over the course of a lifetime.

Ivy Weingram is an Associate Curator at the National Museum of American Jewish History (NMAJH) in Philadelphia. She is the curator of the original NMAJH exhibition, Leonard Bernstein: The Power of Music, and a recipient of 2 grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Since 2008 Weingram has co-curated 2 NMAJH special exhibitions, written exhibition narratives, conducted artifact research, written exhibition text and grant narratives, and worked with designers, media producers, and fabricators in the design and refinement of NMAJH’s core exhibition and special exhibitions.
