Democracy in the Jewish State with Lior Doron & Special Presenters

Can Israel be both Jewish and democratic? We will delve into ways Israel stands as a democratic country while maintaining its Jewish character and ways it fails to do so. We’ll examine the Zionist vision, the parliamentary system, Jewish pluralism and minorities in Israel. Guest presenters include Brian Reeves (former Visiting Fellow, Mitvim Institute), Rabbi Schwartzman, Cantor Rhodes, Pnina Agenyahu (Federation Shlicha), and Pam Konde (TRS faculty). Lior Doron serves as our TRS Shlicha/Israel emissary.

“I’m a poet, I know it, hope I don’t blow it”: God and Spirituality in the Songs of Bob Dylan with Andy Baldwin

What do Nobel Prize winner Bob Dylan’s lyrics say about God and the Bible? Discover the spiritual content of selected Dylan songs through videos, listening, lyric examination and discussion. Exposure to other scholarly and popular writing about Bob Dylan will also be included. Andy is a retired public school teacher and teaches the 11th &12th grades in our Religious School. He went to his first Bob Dylan concert in 1965 and has been an avid fan ever since.

A Taste of Judaism… Are You Curious? with Cantor Allen Leider (free)

Beyond the bagels and holidays, what is at the core of Judaism? How does it speak to daily living? We’ll investigate the Jewish understanding of spirituality, ethics, and community through text study and discussion. This course is co-sponsored by the Union for Reform Judaism and is open to anyone, Jewish or not. Invite your friends and family members. Cantor Leider is celebrating his 29th year as a cantor/educator and his 10th year at TRS.

Ayeka: Bringing God into my Relationships with Danielle Heyman-Feist

How can relationships be guided by Jewish ideas about God and spirituality? Spiritual growth can be measured by how we behave with others. Are we behaving with greater love, kindness, and patience? Are moments of jealousy stemming from a lack of awareness of our own God-given uniqueness and gifts? These sessions provide the venue for taking steps to become a more loving, patient, giving human being. Danielle has been a long-time valued teacher at TRS to teens and adults. She currently serves as TRS Camp Director.

Food from the Mountain Top – Recipes and Stories inspired by the Holiday of Shavuot with Lauren Katz (15 students max)

Have you cracked into the cookbooks to test the traditional foods of Shavuot? Are you ready for some new ideas and tips to wow your family and friends this year? We will be making appetizers, main dishes, and desserts to enjoy on Shavuot or anytime. We’ll look at the rich culture of Jewish cooking from around the world. All dishes will be easily replicable at home. Learn to create signature recipes by putting your own creative stamp on each dish! Lauren is an award-winning cook and baker, who is best known for winning ABC’s “The Great Holiday Baking Show” in 2015. She loves to teach others how to feel comfortable in the kitchen!
