Wine, Women and the War of the Sexes – Tales of Talmudic Marital Discord

Rabbi Stephanie Bernstein

We will study three rabbinic tales that describe a war between the sexes in which wine plays an important role. In each tale, assertive women confront men who use the law as an instrument against women who drink with men, and who try to put women in their place. We will study the ways in which wine symbolizes the women’s fertility and femininity, and how women use this power over men.

Science vs Faith and Values

Bill Berkson – philosopher, author, font maven and creator of mentsh.com

Jay Labov – Senior Advisor-National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine

Discoveries and advancements in science and technology often outpace society’s ability to absorb or influence them. Sometimes these advances may appear to conflict with the needs of society and faiths.

Session 1: Sacred Relationships. Does science leave any room for faith?

Session 2: The Nature of Science, Scientific Research and Scientific Discovery Sacred Relationships.

Session 3: Potential Future Interactions Between Science, Jewish Values, and Faith

Pop Music as a Barometer of Israeli Society and Politics

Lee Walzer – TRS faculty member extraordinairre

Israeli pop and rock music provide a fascinating look into the cultural and political issues in Israeli society. This course is designed to go beyond newspaper headlines and social media posts to explore what Israelis think about some of the core issues and challenges facing their country. Topics and corresponding music will include Religion and State, Immigrants, and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict.
