Event description

Description

Women, are you having trouble finding a New Year’s resolution that makes you feel more empowered? Want to play with swords? Want to do *both*?

If so, then we are proud to present "Being a She-Wolf," a four-part workshop focusing on women's empowerment through HEMA, taught by guest presenter Rebecca Glass. The prospect of fencing another person, in a competition, with a longsword, can seem like a daunting task. How can anyone develop the strength, fortitude, athleticism, and mentality needed to be successful? It may seem like something that can’t be done.

Well, we’re here to tell you that it can!

This workshop is for those who have never held a sword, those who have some HEMA experience but have never quite felt quite right, or those who are fairly skilled but never felt comfortable to compete. We will provide the introductory info that you need; no experience is required for the first workshop. In this workshop series, we will work together to learn the goal-setting and coping strategies that will help you feel more empowered in life generally -- so much so that you could even be comfortable at the competitive level. We will learn these strategies through the pursuit of both fitness and fighting goals, as we chart our progress throughout the year — culminating in a FREE in-house mini tournament so that you, too, will get the chance to experience the atmosphere of competitive HEMA.

Once learned, you’ll be able to apply the ability to develop goals and coping strategies to all the facets of your life outside of HEMA — whether it’s for school, a job, or a favorite hobby.

WHAT TO BRING: Yourself, exercise clothes, a bottle of water/Gatorade, a snack, and pen and paper to take notes. If you have them, a longsword (steel, synthetic, or padded), and a mask and gloves (and any other kit you have). We’ll have some loaners available, but for safety reasons, we may ask those with gloves insufficient for steel longsword to stick to padded swords.

COST: $25 per class. Classes will be held quarterly, on 1/6, 4/14, 7/14, and 10/13.

About our guest instructor:

Rebecca Glass has been studying German Longsword with the New York Historical Fencing Association since 2014, and competes regularly in local, regional, and national events. She is a member of the 2017-2018 HEMA Alliance Governing Council, and maintains a HEMA-related blog at HEMAphilia.tumblr.com, where she chronicles the joys and frustrations of pursuing the art of historical fencing.
