In 2002, she launched her clothing label: Samia Malik ihtgw, that was independently sold worldwide. In 2004, she studied MA Womenswear at Central St Martins. In 2007, she designed for musician MIA at the release of her second album 'Kala'. Between 2012 - 2014, she studied MFA Fine Art at Goldsmiths University. Between 2013 - 2014, with artist Indra Morodor she ran an independent gallery in Tower Hamlets, where she regularly curated art exhibitions, and one of the last exhibitions in gallery was a fundraiser for Palestine. Since then central focus of her art practice has been focused on issues of social justice. As an artist she's participated in grassroots activist organised exhibitions and one of them is Roots Culture Identity curated by Zita Holborne. She has organised with horizontal movements: Free University, Sisters Uncut, Black Lives Matter groups based in London. She's currently doing a PG Cert, Teaching Within programme at University of Arts, working as an associate lecturer at Central St Martins and Wimbledon School of Art. Between April - May 2016, she curated artists: Zita Holborne and Little Indian, responding to Women of Colour Index archive at Women's Art Library at Goldsmiths University. Since October 2016, she's been working with WOCI Reading Group, improving the visibility of Black and Asian female artists.

Samia will also be discussing from her own perspective and experience, what it's like being a person of colour within the creative industries and how that intersects with identities of gender and class. We will also have a Q&A afterwards.

Join the conversation on Wednesday 24th of January at Chelsea Billards Room, Chelsea College of Art.
