Making Learning Personal

The “personalized” movement began in the early 2000s, and has gained significant momentum over the past 10 years. During this time, systems of education have adopted, developed, and successfully maintained models of personalized learning. At the same time, school systems implemented and abandon personalized learning. These lived experiences, positive and negative, provide important data and research upon which to build understandings and practices about how to successfully personalize learning in classrooms and schools.

Conventionally inflexible systems and structures (timetables, classrooms, curriculum, etc.) make it difficult for teachers to create and maintain personalized learning experiences for students. School’s creating sustainable and scalable personalized learning models are making systems and structure agile and adaptable, so they wrap around learners rather than learners bending themselves around inflexible school structures. This workshop will present real examples of personalized learning pedagogies as well as examples schools transformation themselves to better meet the learning and developmental needs of all students.

Participants will:

  • Build understandings about why shifting multiple systems and structures is essential for creating sustainable and scalable personalized learning programs, and strategies for doing this work.

  • Explore ways in which technologies (e.g. artificial intelligence, big data, and the internet) support personalized learning (and detract).

  • Use research-based indicators to identify the components of high-quality personalized learning experiences that activate learning.

  • Work collaboratively to construct a high-quality personalized learning experiences for students.

  • Develop research-based purpose and rationale statements for creating personalized learning systems and structures within their own classrooms and schools, from pedagogies to schedules to spaces....

Audience:

Teachers and school leaders interested in deepening their understandings about the personalizing of learning within classrooms and need to shift system-wide systems and structures.

Workshop Presenter's Biography:

This is John’s fifth year as WAB’s Deputy Director and thirty-second in education. At WAB John oversees the educational program and chairs the FLoW21 steering committee. Before moving into international education John worked at public schools in Toronto. At one school 1200 students high school self-directed their learning and created individualized timetables. At another students and teachers were amongst the first in Canada to use laptops. John has been part of and/or led significant school-wide change initiatives. Some have been highly successful and sustained for 25+ years and others failed after 5. This experience has provided John with valuable insights into change strategies that work, and don’t. John’s doctoral dissertation focused on the impact of adaptive and mobile technologies on the personalization of learning.

Additional Administration Costs: An additional administration fee of US$100.00 . This fee will be included in the invoice.

Late Payments: If paying by invoice and payment for participants is not made prior to the workshops commencing, a late payment fee will be incurred of US$40.00 per person. The school will be invoiced for this following the workshops.

Cancellation Policy

Please note that each workshop will proceed based on participant registration. Innovative Global Education will inform you by 24 September 2019 or earlier if the workshop is to be cancelled. If the workshop is cancelled your full payment will be reimbursed. If the workshop is proceeding you will not receive an email.

Workshop Participation

If Innovative Global Education is informed by by 24 September, 2019 that a participant is unable to attend the workshop, a full refund will be given. If notification of not being able to participate is after 24 September, 2019 IGE will be unable to refund the registration fee.

If, for any reason, a school needs to either transfer a registered participant to another workshop from the workshop registered or change the name of the participant attending a workshop, Innovative Global Education can make these changes on request from school or participant by the 5 October free of charge.

Important: Innovative Global Education must be informed by 5 October 2019 of any changes. If any changes are requested after this date, please note, for the change to go ahead there will be an administration fee of US$30.00 charged by invoice for each requested change.
