Event description

Description

Beijing Opera is a unique window for you to understand the Chinese culture and value. It is deeply rooted in the 5,000 years of Chinese history and was declared as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2010. The performance today includes 4 talent shows and 4 shortened opera classics, and would last approximately 2 hours and 40 minutes. Opera sung in Chinese with English and Chinese subtitles as well as bilingual narration. Art Director Qin Xueling is regarded as one of the most renowned Beijing Opera artists and won numerous award. Among the cast this year, there are not only seasoned artists but also 3 non native-Chinese performers. Kudos to them!

Classics: Susan’s Redemption《苏三起解》

Susan was miserably put in jail. She would need help from kind-hearted people like Chong Gongdao and good luck to prove her innocence, and to get reunion with her beloved. This Mei style classic play is among the most frequently performed by various types of Chinese opera. Its fast-tempo “running water” aria is also a household song.

Classics: Flower Fairy 《天女散花》

The play, one of the most historically significant works by Beijing Opera Icon Mei Lanfang, is adapted from Buddhism stories and features in the song and movement of a flower fairy who sprinkles petal from heaven as a means to test the readiness of a Buddhist novice. The heavenly woman performs a poetically expressive ribbon dance with a 15-metre long silk strip, indicating that she ascends above the clouds.

Talent Show: Female Warrior Hu Sanniang 《扈三娘》
The martial play is adapted from the legendary novel "Men All over the Sea Are Brothers". It involves more choreography than singing. The heroine, Hu Sanniang, excelled in martial arts and used a halberd as her weapon. When she learned that some brigands were coming to attack her hometown, she was furious. In her point of view, they were but cowards. In this scene the fully armed warrior expressed her thoughts prior to the battle through choreography. The skillful combat and martial arts are highlights of the show.
Leading Performer: Li Tao

Classics: Humanity and Justice 《秦香莲》

Ms. Qin Xianglian took care of her poor family single-handily and never expected that her husband was determined to abandon her and their children after his social status changed. In this act Qin broke into the palace to reason with the man. The classic is a typical work of Zhang performing style in Beijing Opera’s repertoire.

Classics: Drunken Beauty 《贵妃醉酒》

The Drunken Beauty is one of the most famous masterpieces of Mei Lanfang, the founder of the Mei Style of Beijing Opera performance. The story is about Lady Yang Yuhuan, a rare beauty and the Emperor’s favorite concubine. Neglected one day by the Emperor despite that they had an appointment at the Flower Pavilion, the Beauty drank a lot by herself with an attempt to ignore the doomed future that she eventually had to face.
