Description

Mathematics Learning & Teaching for the 21st Century

Workshop Descriptor:

The goal of this workshop is to provide participants with skills, knowledge and ideas so that they may successfully address the teaching and learning of mathematics within the context of their own educational setting.

Participants will explore mathematical concepts through hands-on engagement with a range of mathemaical tasks. They will have an opportunity to discuss the teaching and learning of mathematics, reflect upon recent, relevant research into mathematics education, engage with and share resources, and consider how they may develop a balanced mathematics programme so that students have opportunities to learn about, learn through and learn in mathematics.

Participants will inquire into:

how mathematics may be taught using a conceptual, inquiry based approach

recent, relevant research in mathematics education

how mathematics can be addressed in an integrated and stand alone manner

how students learn about, learn through and learn in mathematics so that they may construct meaning and develop understanding

refelct ipon/connect the impact of the workshop with their current teaching of mathematics

Learning about, through and in mathematics

In a balanced programme of inquiry students learn about, learn through and learn in mathematics.
When specific mathematical skills, knowledge and understandings are taught students are learning about mathematics. When these skills, knowledge and understandings are applied in authentic contexts, within a unit of inquiry or as a stand-alone inquiry, students are learning through mathematics. Students learning about and through mathematics are conceptualizing and learning in mathematics.
