Event description

Description

Designing Environments for Play and Inquiry in the Early Years

Workshop Descriptor:

The role of the environment can never be underestimated. Engaging the lenses of play and inquiry undoubtedly shapes the design of learning spaces in the early years. When designed and constructed thoughtfully, learning environments have the power to nourish, support and promote learning; uniting teachers and children in the process of building understanding and sharing meaning-making.

This workshop focuses time and attention to the many ways educators can harness the power of the ‘third teacher’ in their context.

Participants will work collaboratively to understand how learning environments can:

  • Communicate our values
  • Provide affordances for play and inquiry, learning and discovery
  • Act as the ‘third teacher’
  • Support collaboration and shared meaning making
  • Support children’s interests and unique learning styles
  • Build wellbeing, relationships and community

Audience:

Early Years Educators, Leaders and Curriculum Coordinators who have specific responsibility for the Early Years.

For all individuals who would like to deepen their understanding of the way early years learning environments give shape to and stimulate meaningful educational possibilities for young children.

Workshop Presenter: Fiona Zinn

Fiona Zinn is an Early Childhood, Primary and Tertiary Educator with over 25 years experience in teaching and leadership within Australia and abroad. She has been a Committee Member of the Reggio Emilia Australia Information Exchange and a PYP Workshop Leader/Curriculum Developer with the International Baccalaureate since 2004. For the past decade, Fiona has lectured at The University of Melbourne as part of the Masters in International Education (International Baccalaureate) and regularly leads pedagogical workshops for teachers around the world.

Since 2005, Fiona has participated in several International and Australian curriculum writing teams. She is currently contracted to the Tasmanian Education Department to design and implement a shared research project titled ‘Refocusing Teaching and Learning in the Early Years’ across 50 Tasmanian Primary Schools and Child and Family Centres.

Fiona’s work finds a resonance with the educational philosophy of Reggio Emilia and also the research that underpins the Positive Psychology movement; she seeks to enhance her educational collaborations drawing on these two philosophies.

Fiona enjoys innovation, building vision and working collaboratively with teachers to re-energise their pedagogy, re-invigorate learning environments and enhance educational possibilities for children.
