Description

What do poet Emma Lazarus, theoretical physicist Albert Einstein, and MLB Hall of Famer Hank Greenberg have in common? Tucked away in an unassuming building near Union Square, some of their most famous and rarely seen possessions are preserved in an astonishing collection. Now’s your chance to see these storied treasures up close, on a behind-the-scenes tour through one of the premier archives on the planet.

Join New York Adventure Club for an exclusive, behind-the-scenes look inside the Center for Jewish History. Illuminating the history, culture, and heritage of the Jewish people, the Center for Jewish History is home to five partner organizations and their extraordinary collections, which together make up the world’s largest and most comprehensive archive of the modern Jewish experience outside of Israel.

Led by Annie Polland, Executive Director of the American Jewish Historical Society, our after-hours experience at the Center for Jewish History will include:

  • An overview of the Center for Jewish History, which contains tens of millions of documents, more than 500,000 books, as well as thousands of artworks, photographs, textiles, ritual objects, recordings, and films
  • A walk-through of the 140,000-square-foot facility, with stops inside the Processing Lab (to see how archivists analyze and categorize rare archival items) and Digital Lab (to see how everything from miniature books to oversize newspapers are digitized — items currently being digitized will be on hand for careful viewing)
  • An exclusive foray into the private stacks of the American Jewish Historical Society’s archives
  • A trip inside the Reading Room for a close-up look at intriguing and rarely seen artifacts — from the collections of the American Jewish Society, you’ll see the original hand-written copy of Emma Lazarus’ "The New Colossus" poem, Hank Greenberg's baseball bat (Major League Baseball two-time MVP winner and Hall of Fame inductee), and from the Leo Baeck Institute, Albert Einstein’s personal photo albums and private guest book
