Description

Featuring APM Reports journalists Madeleine Baran and Samara Freemark

Discussion led by HSJMC Assistant Professor Sid Bedingfield with Malinda Lindquist, associate professor, department of History.

When a man is tried for the same crime six times, what’s going on? That simple question launched reporters from the podcast In the Dark on a year-long journalistic journey. The result? An award-winning 11 episodes, heard by millions, with findings that influenced Supreme Court action. Join the Hubbard School of Journalism and Mass Communication as we pull back the curtain on that experience with the podcast’s main reporter Madeleine Baran and senior producer Samara Freemark.

APM Reports' Season 2 of the podcast In the Dark investigated the case of Curtis Flowers, a black man on death row in Mississippi who has spent more than two decades of his life being tried, over and over, for the same crime by the same white prosecutor. The team spent a year near the small town of Winona, Miss., uncovering misconduct, injustice and racial divide in the case.

The team's reporting on the prosecutor's record of racial bias in jury selection was instrumental in the decision last fall by the Supreme Court of the United States to consider Flowers' petition for appeal - something that happens in only 1 percent of petitions filed with the court.

Join us for a fascinating discussion about investigative reporting and the emergence of podcasting as a powerful platform for it, just one week after the court hears oral arguments in Flowers' case, and following the first of four new In the Dark episodes, launching on March 19.
