behind the black panther

Color of Comics: "Behind the Black Panther" TM panel discussions will be held in the Auburn Avenue African American Research Library's newly renovated 200 seat auditorium. Color of Comics will honor the late great Marvel Artist Billy Graham, who was the first African American to draw both the Black Panther and Luke Cage characters for Marvel back in the 70s. Artist Billy Graham’s work influenced 80% of what you experienced with the Black Panther Movie phenomenon and what you may have enjoyed in the Netflix Luke Cage series. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/03/07/movies/black-panther-luke-cage-artist-billy-graham.html

We have invited Artist Billy Graham’s closest friends, esteemed guests, Don McGregor (visionary and original writer of the Black Panther comic series from the 70s), and Alex Simmons (who helped conceptualize the map of Wakanda for the Black Panther comic), "to tell the rest of the story.”

Featured will be an appearance by one of the HEROES of Hip-Hop who is now creating heroes in comics, Darryl “DMC” McDaniels of the legendary RAP group RUN DMC. Mr. McDaniels is bringing Darryl-Makes-Comics to the ATL. The talks will be led and guided by a distinguished powerhouse of PhDs comprising of Dr. Sheena Howard, Dr. Jonathan Gayles, and Dr. Stephane Dunn of Morehouse College Cinema Studies (CTEMS).

The Research Library will have on hand a display highlighting the pioneering comic series Brother Man, and to further honor the work of Artist Billy Graham and Don McGregor, a private collection of rare Black Panther and Luke Cage comics will be displayed as well.

Doors open with activities beginning at 11 am with the showing of Dr. Jonathan Gayles’ documentary “White Scripts and Black Supermen” (52 mins).

Dr. Sheena Howard will have her award-winning books on display, including the “Black Encyclopedia of Comics.”

“Comfort cuisine” and beverages on-site provided by Castellos Jamerican Cuisine Food Truck, and "Vae’s (very Cute) Lemonade Stand", which will be available for purchases.

If you are in town for the 2019 Dragon Con Comic Convention, 2019 Chick-fil-A Kick-Off at Mercedes Benz Stadium, MEAC SWAC Challenge HBCU college football game, or Black Pride Weekend, please allow us to make Color of Comics one of your experiences Labor Day Weekend.
