Event description
This is an intensive 24-hours training (for 6 sessions) designed for oral interpreters in the behavioral health settings.

About this event

This online training is offered FREE of charge by the Virginia Healing Partnership with the support of the DSS Office of New Americans Refugee Services and DBHDS Office of Behavioral Health Wellness.

You need to submit an application form to be considered for the training.

Registration may close early if the maximum number of qualified applicants is reached.

A. Training Details

1. Training Schedule: August 3-5 and 10-12, 2021 1:00-5:00 PM (6 sessions)

2. Pre-training session: July 27, 2021, 1:00-3:00 PM

This training has 24-hour synchronous training, 2 hours pre-training, and 6 hours of self-study time (assignment before and after class). You will receive a total of 32 credit hours.

The instructional time is conducted online for six 4-hour sessions that cover background of the American educational system, understanding the legal framework, and strengthening the interpreter skills. This course provides participants with basic knowledge and skills to render high quality interpreting when serving mental health, substance use, and developmental disability related cases in schools.

B. Who are qualified?

1. Persons who are proficient in English and a foreign language. You will have to take and pass the language tests. If you live in Virginia, VRHP will pay for your language testing fee.

2. 18 years old and above.

3. Has completed high school or its equivalent in the United States.

4. Able to complete the 24-hour synchronous training.

5. Able to spend 8 extra hours for pre-training, pre-assignment, and content-related reading materials.

6. Intends to interpret in the educational settings (such as cases in mental health, substance use, and developmental disabilities).

C. Training Essentials

7. Has adequate skills to navigate online tools such as Google Docs, Zoom and email.

8. Has a computer or laptop with internet connection to access.

9. Is able to attend the training completely, including the pre-training orientation.
