Behavioral Activation for Depression: Roots, Science, and Real-World Application (CE 3)

Anahi Collado, Ph.D.

Please plan to login by 8:40 AM to check-in. We will start promptly at 8:45 AM.

INTERMEDIATE LEVEL Target audience: clinicians and mental health professionals

Depression is highly prevalent and a primary cause of disability and suicide worldwide. A recent proliferation of empirical investigations examining behavioral activation (BA) for depression suggests the effectiveness of this parsimonious and flexible treatment across a wide range of populations. Among the strengths of BA are its idiographic nature, cost-effectiveness, and brevity. It is expected that at the conclusion of this training, CE attendees will have a strong grasp of the theoretical underpinnings of BA, strategies for implementation/adaptation of BA across a wide range of groups, and ways to problem-solve obstacles to the delivery of BA.

Objectives:

  1. Describe the theoretical foundation of BA.
  2. Discuss empirical examples of how BA has been effectively delivered across diverse populations including adolescents, Latinos, low-income populations, populations with depression and co-occurring disorders (PTSD and substance use).
  3. Explain the core components of BA.
  4. Demonstrate two BA techniques.
