What makes a reader (or an editor) stay with a story once they start reading it? In this workshop, we'll dig into what makes a story opening hook a reader, what keeps them interested through the middle, and what makes them leave it feeling satisfied. In addition to exploring successful techniques in published stories, writers will have the chance to examine their own work at the beginning of the class, and to generate new work over the course of the class.

In the first session, we'll examine the first pages of stories written by both published authors and workshop participants and write from a prompt designed to kickstart a new flash piece or short story. The second week we'll examine the middles of stories, and the third week we'll discuss endings. In the final session we'll look at student stories generated over the course of the workshop and bring the entire picture together.
