This six week workshop examines the broadest possible structural components of prose: beginnings, middles, and ends. The goal is to examine the ways in which each component can or can’t work, should or shouldn’t work, or will or won’t work, regardless of genre.

We’ll progress through beginnings, middles, and ends in order, with two weeks spent on each component, and you’ll have the opportunity to submit work based on your own weak areas. Can’t figure out how to start off that novel or story? Submit early. Does your essay wander off into the weeds somewhere around the middle? Is that fifty-page dinner scene really necessary? Middle weeks are just for you. Should your character wake on the last page and realize it was all a dream? What about all those people you introduced during the last few pages? Probably best to chuck in the last two weeks, while we’re talking about endings!

Throughout discussions on structure, we’ll also look at style, character, theme, setting, and anything else necessary. Each week will feature discussion, prompts or exercises, and peer-review sessions. All genres, forms, and experiences are more than welcome.

Note about Writespace’s online workshops: Participants should plan to commit three hours per week to reading, posting, and responding to assignments in the online classroom and one to two hours per week to writing outside the classroom. Online workshops offer built-in flexibility and are ideal for writers with busy schedules, as the times participants visit the classroom are determined solely by their own availability, whether they are available at 3 PM or at 3 AM or at any other times on any other days of the week. Participants will be invited to enter the online classroom and will receive instructions the day the workshop begins.
