In this workshop we will explore what poetry is, why we write it, and how we write it. To understand the fundamentals of what makes a poem a poem, we will examine a broad range of poetic forms and styles. We will touch on the variety of poetic communities from academic to street, from polished publication to performance poetry. Students will experiment with writing their own poems in varying styles, challenging themselves to try new forms, tones, and approaches, but more importantly, we will discover—or rediscover— together all the joys of writing. We will find out what it means to see poetry as a tool to connect at a deeper level to ourselves and others, while expanding our abilities as we unlock the tools to explore wonder and delight in the world or the power of our inner selves—no matter where that leads us.
