In this workshop, we will explore plotting, casting, and developing the stories that keep us up at night. Through examining the work of highly successful published authors, exploring in-class writing exercises, and reviewing and discussing our own manuscripts, we will learn to craft mystery, thriller, and suspense novels that readers can’t put down--and can’t forget once they reach the last page. We will discuss how to flesh out fully realized characters and how to create believable (as opposed to realistic) situations in which to drop those hapless characters, as well as delve into understanding the suspense of mystery and the mystery of suspense. Though it is not necessary to be in the process of writing a mystery to join this workshop, participants who are working on a project will be invited to submit the first 2000 words of their manuscript for review. Please come prepared to engage in discussion, share your writing, ask questions, and get ready to take your mystery, thriller, or suspense story to the next level.
