How do you start a literary journey? Maybe you have some ideas for a novel, or you simply have a strong desire to put thoughts onto paper. Maybe you have been writing for years, but feel stuck. A blank page can be daunting, and self-doubt can be paralyzing. According to author Stephen Koch, though, “The only way to begin is to begin, and begin right now.” In this four-week class, we’ll take this sentiment to heart. We will begin! Whether you are new to fiction or simply looking for a tune-up, this class will offer ways to kick-start your writing practice. We will cover foundational craft elements—plot, character, dialogue, setting, and structure—and read inspiring sample fiction, both classical and contemporary. Through a series of writing exercises, we will practice different elements of craft and work toward unlocking our full creative potential. All participants will have the opportunity to present their writing for group critique and discussion. We will also set aside to time to talk about “the writing life.” How, for instance, to write with a busy schedule? What to do about writer’s block? Most importantly: Now that you have begun, what comes next?

All genres of fiction are welcome in this class, from literary fiction to mystery to science fiction and fantasy!
