Des Moines European Heritage Association invites you to explore the Danish language during this 8-week beginning Danish language course for adults (starting Monday, March 30, 2020). During each 90-minute session, you will have the opportunity to learn language for everyday life and explore culture, all the while developing proficiency with grammar and vocabulary.

There will be assigned homework and studying each week. A textbook and workbook will need to be purchased by the student prior to the beginning of the course in addition to the course fee of $96. These materials will need to be ordered online and cost approximately $50 (including shipping).

  • Please expect to spend 2.5 - 8 hours on homework every week. Everyone learns languages at their own pace. In order to remember it the best, you should spend about 20-30 minutes every day with your homework. Regular self-study and repetition or meeting with others might be helpful.
  • Having a general understanding of English grammar or having studied another language is helpful, but not required.
  • The course is structured to learn vocabulary and grammar from scratch while covering a variety of everyday topics.
  • This class is non-credit but designed to eventually lead to language proficiency in writing, reading and speaking.

Our adult language programs utilize the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL) which is a guideline used to describe achievements of learners of foreign languages across Europe and other countries. CEFRL is a system of validation of language ability and can be utilized by job applicants and adult students to demonstrate their language proficiency.

We will meet at the Grand View University. You may park in the parking lot directly south of the Student Center (Y on the map). Click here for a campus map.

About the instructor: Barbara Thomsen's world changed when she, at 16, spent a year in Denmark as an exchange student. Her host family spoke basically no English so within 3 months of total emersion she became well-spoken in daily Danish. Her skills then expanded when she choose to attend Dana College and got her Minor in Danish and took a semester abroad to Denmark again to student teach English in a Danish FolkeSchool to a class of very curious 6th graders. Today, married to her high school sweetheart - her great Dane - that she met while in Denmark, she has taught refugees in Danish while living for many years in Denmark working for an International Language School. Danish is spoken daily in the Thomsen household as well observing the important customs - HYGGE - that Danes hold dear!
