Event description
This course covers the basics of beginning beekeeping with an in-class lecture and seasonal hive-checks at the USU Botanical Center Apiary.

About this Event

Join USU Extension and local commercial beekeeper Richard Homer, of Homer's Honey, to learn the basics of beekeeping. Class will cover a variety of topics including basic hive set up, bee life cycle, mite treatments, and what to expect as a beginning beekeeper.

The lecture portion of the class will be held on February 8th from 9:00 am to noon at the USU Kaysville Education Building (80 East 725 South, Kaysville, UT 84037).

Hive-checks will be held seasonally to help you manage your bees as the seasons change. This portion of the class is valuable, allowing you to see inside a working hive, observe specific tasks (such as mite testing and treatment), and ask questions throughout the beekeeping season. Hive-checks will be from 10:00 to 11:00 am at the USU Botanical Center Apiary on the following dates:

  • April 25th
  • July 11th
  • September 26th

A waiver will need to be signed prior to attending the hive-checks. It is highly recommended that participants bring their own bee suits and gloves for the hive-checks, however, there are a limited number of bee suits available for participants on a first come, first serve basis.

For questions, please call Sheriden Hansen at 435-919-1323.
