An introduction to shooting with a DSLR or Mirrorless camera in Manual mode, understanding proper exposure, good light, and composition.

About this event

What will you do?

In this initial session together, we'll build your familiarity with basic camera controls and settings so you're comfortable shooting in Manual mode. Once you're comfortable shooting in Manual mode, we'll work on basic composition techniques and understanding light. Whether you're interested in street photography, travel photography, portraits, landscapes, or wildlife photography, this small group workshop will cover the fundamentals that are critical for making great photos in all those specialties.

What do you get?

Small group and 1-on-1 time with a skilled and passionate instructor to make sure leave the workshop knowing more than when you came in and, hopefully, feeling inspired to go out and take some photos.

You'll also get a spiral bound copy of my 50 page Photography Basics Guide, which is the basis of this class, that will be a reference both in and out of class, with plenty of information on gear, exposure, compensation, and more.

Where is it?

The venue selected is outdoors. Specifically, the plaza in Old Town Albuquerque. We'll meet at the gazebo in the center of the plaza.

We will be standing and/or walking during the class period, so if this is problematic, please bring a small folding seat or pad to sit on the ground if you have trouble standing. Be prepared based on the conditions, so consider a hat, sunscreen, and water to keep hydrated - or alternatively, a wool cap, gloves, or jacket if it's cold or cool.

Of course, this also means the event is dependent on the weather cooperating. If for any reason we have to cancel due to inclement weather, the instructor will email you and then reschedule. You can then use that ticket at the rescheduled event or ask for a refund if unable to attend at the rescheduled date/time.

What do you need to bring?:

Nothing. Just your passion and interest. We will provide a DSLR camera to each student, for the duration of the class, for teaching the basics so the instructor can focus on teaching key skills and not trying to learn everyone's individual brand and model of camera and or potentially personal cameras that don't allow shooting in full manual.

However, you can bring your own camera to ask specific questions after the workshop. If you would also like to use that camera during the workshop, you and the camera must meet the following:

  1. The camera must be a DSLR or Mirrorless camera capable of shooting in full manual mode
  2. You must be familiar with the controls on your camera and how to set it to Manual as well as how to change the ISO, Shutter Speed, and Aperture on your own.
  3. Ensure you have an empty SD card with enough space for .pictures (4GB-8GB or higher usually)
  4. Have a fully charged batter for the camera - and perhaps an extra just in case.

Refunds & Cancellations

We have limited spots/seating available for workshops, classes, and tutoring. For this reason, if your cancellation is on the day off or 48 hours or less in advance of the session, you will not get a refund. If you cancel at least 48 hours or more in advance of the class, you will receive a full refund.

If your cancellation in that time period is due to unforeseen circumstances and you can talk to us directly, we can give you full credit to attend another session in the future.
