Event description

Description

Join the BFF for a discussion about the fast-changing documentary landscape.

As the filmmaking space becomes more professionalized—with growing changes in tech, distribution, and audience preferences—filmmakers are facing new challenges. Few can afford, nor desire, to work in isolation. But partnerships are complex. And when creatives and advocates and funders work together—now standard practice in many issue areas— their impact is sometimes hampered by a lack of transparency, competing expectations, insufficient resources, and other awkward factors. In this roundtable discussion -- drawn from years of research at Active Voice/Lab -- we'll present stories of situations that crashed and burned, partnerships that went the extra mile, and the stuff in-between. What sober questions should we be asking of each other right at the start? How do we talk about what we want to do? And how do we know if we're really getting anywhere?

Our Panel: Cristine Platt Dewey from ro*co films | Donald Young, Center for Asian American Media (CAAM) | Ellen Schneider of Active Voice Lab | Sahar Driver, independent film strategist
