I never said that…. You have no right to feel that way… Everyone thinks you are wrong… That never happened…

In 1944 the term “gaslight” came into the public consciousness with the film by the same name. Yet, 75 years later, people still do not fully understand it. Gaslighting is the manipulation of choice for the 21st century. This workshop will breakdown the what, why, and how of gaslighting. Gaslighting is the denial of another person’s reality, and can happen in close relationships, workplaces, and in society at large. It has become so endemic and such an embedded form of communication that many people do not recognize it is happening, but it is critical that you do. Exposure to chronic gaslighting can result in self-doubt, confusion, self-blame, helplessness and hopelessness. In addition, gaslighting is the language of the narcissistic relationship and at the core of the manipulative dynamics. This workshop will take on the following issues and answer your questions about gaslighting. It will be a deep dive into the dark corners of gaslighting including:

  • An overview of it beyond a simple framework of reality bending.
  • Why do gaslighters gaslight?
  • What is the relationship between narcissism and gaslighting?
  • What does gaslighting do to us?
  • Gaslighting by “tribe” and how it magnifies the negative impacts of gaslighting.
  • Developmental and family of origin gaslighting
  • Gaslighting in media and social media
  • The differential impacts of gaslighting on people who have less power and privilege
  • How all of us are guilty of daily gaslighting and how to catch ourselves doing it
  • How can we raise more gaslight resistant children?
  • Gaslighting in the workplace
  • An overview of coping strategies we can all use to become more gaslight resistant
  • A consideration of what the world at large needs to do to address gaslighting
  • Who benefits from gaslighting, and what does that tell us about how to cope with it?

This workshop is designed for people experiencing gaslighting and trying to cope as well as therapists, coaches, workplace consultants, HR professionals, leaders – anyone who is trying to understand the people and issues that contribute to toxic and unhealthy spaces. Understanding this dynamic and getting acquainted (or re-acquainted) with our own reality is a first step to healing from emotionally and psychologically abusive relationships and spaces and to access our full potential. Whether this is happening to you in your intimate relationship, familial relationships, close friends, workplace or social media feed – this workshop is essential to healing and becoming more immune to the manipulation of our time that is harming everyone’s health and well-being. And hopefully, to turn off the gaslights that flicker in your world.
