Description

Becoming Good Soil - Stewardship of our Assets

A series of workshops will be offered by the Diocesan Staff and outside speakers on an important part of practices to ensure the vitality of our parishes, beginning with a session for congregations in Prince George's County.

The workshops are designed to acquaint senior church leadership with best practices for stewardship of the assets entrusted to us for carrying out our mission, including those defined in the Manual of Business Methods in Church Affairs. Ensuring that best practices are followed protects our parishes and all involved and is an integral part of Becoming Good Soil. These workshops will also present an opportunity for networking on common issues, sharing expertise, and identifying resource opportunities where needed.

The first of these workshops will be held at San Mateo/St. Matthews Parish, in Hyattsville [map and directions], on June 6, from 6 pm through 9:30 pm. The agenda is included below. The workshop is intended for Clergy, Wardens and Treasures but we welcome other participants involved in the administration of Church affairs.

Please email Don Crane or Kathleen Hall with any questions.

Preliminary Agenda

Stewardship of our Assets – Business Methods Workshop

The workshop will complement the Strategic Planning Process – where are we and how do our resources support and are necessary to Becoming Good Soil. Financial health is a key component that enables parishes to take the steps to attain or continue vitality.

  • Business Methods in Church Affairs will be covered by a panel of experts in internal controls, accounting, auditing, and sound business practices. Effective financial management will be addressed and the importance of accurate and complete financial statements and trends.

  • IT systems - adequacy of infrastructure, both hardware and software, will be reviewed - cloud based and desktop platforms, as well as the importance and methodology for ensuring protection and security of information and systems.

  • Human Resources are essential to our parishes. The Diocesan staff will review best practices, current issues, employment and how to manage these areas for a healthy workplace environment.

  • Risk issues and Compliance. There are a variety of requirements that affect our administrative practices and facilities/resource management, including building maintenance, governmental requirements, contractual relationships, and unexpected events. The workshop will highlight the areas to assess as part of a sound risk and compliance practice.

  • The Diocese is committed to building relationships within and across regions as well as responding to parish needs. The workshop will be an opportunity to identify areas where parishes can work together, as well as identify resource and experience that can be shared and capacity built.
