About this Event

-SPACE IS LIMITED, RSVP IS HIGHLY ENCOURAGED-

As a leading scholar on Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSI's), Dr. Gina Ann Garcia's presentation focuses on moving theoretical ideas about how to best serve Latinx and other marginalized students at Hispanic Serving Institutions.

Dr. Garcia argues that in order for HSI's to achieve equitable outcomes and experiences for students, they must first acknowledge the "coloniality of power" that prevents students from succeeding. Dr. Garcia is an Associate Professor in the Department of Administrative and Policy Studies at the University of Pittsburgh.

As a former Student Affairs practicioner, Dr. Garcia draws on her own experiences to guide her research and practice. Her new book Becoming Hispanic-Serving Institutions: Opportunities for Colleges & Universities won the 2020 Book of the Year Award by the American Association of Hispanics in Higher Education, Inc (AAHHE).

Co-Sponsored by the Office of Student Success, the department of Ethnic and Women's Studies, the Office of Student Life and Cultural Centers, and the César E Chávez Center for Higher Education.
