Description

Asking students to perform authentic, complex tasks can provoke higher-level learning, but how can we assess a complicated assignment when it has no “correct” answer? Using rubrics can help you assess the seemingly-unassessable. Rubrics also help clarify and communicate your expectations to your students and make for a simpler, faster, and fair grading process. In this workshop, we’ll present different types of rubric, review rubric design best practices, and guide participants through the process of beginning to create a rubric to use in their courses.

As a result of completing this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Define a rubric and identify its components
  • Recognize when it might be appropriate to use a rubric
  • Describe types of rubrics
  • Describe best practices in rubric creation
  • Explain how rubrics can be used as instructional tools
  • Begin to create a rubric which demonstrates alignment to a learning objective, clear performance criteria, and distinct levels of performance

This is the second workshop in the Becoming a Grading Guru series. The series includes:

1. The Grading Process and Providing Effective Feedback
2. Designing Rubrics
3. Designing Better Test Questions

Participants may complete the entire series or can pick and choose individual workshops to develop specific knowledge and skills. We recommend that participants enroll in the first workshop in the series, The Grading Process and Providing Effective Feedback, before completing Designing Rubrics if possible, because it includes an overview of grading best practices and foundational ideas that will be relevant in other workshops in this series.
