Beauty and the Bridge - A walking tour from Bermondsey to Tower Bridge
Sat, May 6, 2017, 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM BST
This walk explores the complex relationships between the city of London, river Thames and Tower Bridge - London's unique bascule crossing and iconic example of Victorian ingenuity. Guests will be invited to take a longer look at Bermondsey as a site for unfolding interest and examination into urbanism, local area history and psychogeography whilst exploring connections to Tower Bridge as an example of the sublime modernity of Victorian London. There will be elements of participatory art activity and moments of quiet reflection on the banks of the Thames as we reflect on the importance of Tower Bridge in both global and local contexts whilst referring to the work of Jane Jacobs as a leading source of inspiration. The walk will be facilitated by artist Alex Evans, currently Artist in Residence at Tower Bridge and will include a studio visit in the South Tower.
All welcome, please contact Alex on firstname.lastname@example.org for any access needs or additional requirements. Participants will be encouraged to negotiate steps onto the Thames foreshore at Low Tide. This is done under the risk of the individual. Please bring warm, waterproof clothing and any art materials that you might wish to use in capturing the Bridge.
This tour is programmed as part of Jane's Walk, a global network of urbanist events held annually to celebrate the life and work of urbanist Jane Jacobs. For more information please visit: http://janeswalk.org/united-kingdom/london/thames-ro/
