Event description
Three sessions around data literacy, data ethics and data rhetoric.

About this event

BEAUTIFUL DATA

Data comes in different shapes and situations.

Sometimes there is some data missing and we need to work with an incomplete or even ugly dataset; sometimes the data that is collected and available isn’t too bad at all.

Sometimes we need to work more on our data knowledge and skills. Or we need to be more aware of hidden biases. And sometimes our data (and data visualisation) simply misses some poetry to tell the story.

No matter the situation, we can always improve our data.

In three sessions we will take a closer look at data. We will look at the beauty and the possibilities. And how we can make our work with data easier.

Each session will be a mix of a lecture, exercises or cases and Q&A. We have 40 spots available for each session. .

In the first session Ben Jones (founder of Data Literacy) will talk about the 17 key traits of data literacy. He will emphasize on a few of these traits, walk you through an exercise where you can assess your own data literacy strengths and weaknesses and help you (and your organisation) become more fluent in the language of data.

Heather Krause (founder of We All Count) will talk in the second session about ethics and equity in data. This session provides you with several shocking real-world examples and a seven-step framework for identifying inequity and hidden bias in the data product lifecycle.

In the third session Paolo Ciuccarelli (Professor of Design at NorthEastern) will introduce the role of rhetoric in data visualisation. Design is key to engage people with complex issues through data, especially when the audience is not expert. In this session participants will play with rhetorical devices such as visual metaphors and embrace different languages (from visualisation to sonification) in order to provoke an emotional response and re-connect the user with the phenomenon behind the data.
