Class Description:

This is a workshop Nirmal is hosting for beginners, newbies, or anyone who wants to better understand the basics of yoga. All are welcome!

This class is a community class with special savings and we want it to be a way for you to help us grown and improve. We will be asking some questions in a class group discussion after class and ask you to fill out a quick survey.

Yoga classes seem to be filled with people with an innate talent for flexibility and balance, but in truth, the intention of yoga is to provide physical and spiritual benefits for all: yoga is for every body.

In this workshop, we'll break down a sequence of poses, working with options to embrace the needs of diverse body types, that you then can bring home to a daily practice or to help gain facility in a studio yoga class.

We'll also explore breathing practices to help manage energy and stress and conclude with a guided relaxation with live music.

Nirmal Chandraratna (YA-200) is is a yoga instructor and composer with a passion for nurturing connection— to spirit, to community, and to one's deeper self— through embodiment and music. Using the voice, the harmonium and the cello, he creates music for Kirtan and meditation, and works for communal performance.

"...as we began the poses, Nirmal explained to us that extending ourselves too far in order to achieve the perfect pose was not necessary to experience the benefits. He also demonstrated ways to modify some of the stretches for larger body types. When a person with a belly leans forward, there’s a certain way they must do it in order to leave room for said belly. I appreciated this, since yoga can be quite intimidating for people with larger bodies."

FAQs:

Do I need to have yoga experience or skills already?

No, you do not need previous experience with yoga. This class is actually perfect for anyone who has yet to try yoga or has any anxieties around joining a yoga class. That said, this is a judgment-free room where all levels of experience are welcome. If you need a breather at any point in the class you can certainly lay on your mat.

What should I wear?

Wear whatever is comfortable for you. Shorts & t-shirt are standard, and you can change once you arrive at the studio.

What else do I need to bring other than a change of clothes?

• Nothing! Mats/Blocks are provided in the studio for free.

• You can bring a towel if you wish to shower before or after class (or rent a towel at the studio for $2)

• You can water bottle if you want, but there is a water cooler and cups at the studio.
