Remember that scene in “Minority Report” where Tom Cruise is running through a mall and he’s relentlessly targeted by retail offers based on biometric feedback? Though that film was based in the year 2054, that kind of hyperlocalized marketing is already available now, and it’s being done with something called BLE Beacons.

Beacons are the latest evolution in the landscape of the Internet of Things (IOT). As small as a quarter, these wireless Bluetooth-powered location-aware transmitters enable amazingly precise geo-targeted messaging through apps or WIFI. Brick-and-mortar locations such as retail stores, theaters, office buildings and real estate offices can install beacons throughout their locations to hypertarget visitors - their presumptive prime audience - with literally up-to-the-minute offers and marketing messages.
