Event description
Beach N’ Brews First Annual Event – Presented by Friends of Loves Key Proceeds go towards the Loves Key Welcome and Discovery Center

About this Event

FOLKS created this one of a kind event with the uniqueness of Lovers Key in mind. We will be holding the event on the South Beach in our waterside pavilion area. Our goal for this annual event is to raise awareness for the Welcome and Discovery Center that will be breaking ground at the end of this year and the education programs and partnerships that will have a home in the facility.

In addition to your brewery offerings, we will be hosting three food trucks and live music for the evening. We will be offering VIP tickets, which will include early access to the event to be on the beach to toast one of our incredible sunsets, additional food tickets, private seating, a dedicated restroom and VIP parking.

We are also happy to announce that Dan Andrews and Chris Wittman from Captains for Clean Water will also be in attendance and will serve as judges in a beer competition!

I wanted to share some additional information about FOLKS mission and the goal for fundraising during the Beach N’ Brews event.

Background: Friends of Lovers Key (FOLKS) is a Citizen Support Organization (CSO) that directly supports the mission of Lovers Key State Park (LKSP). We are a 501(c)3 organization that is authorized to raise funds in support of the parks objectives through donations, grants and sales of merchandise. Historically we have provided funds to cover budget shortfalls in the park budget, such as fencing and signs during turtle and bird nesting seasons and cleanup and repairs after Irma. We also help provide extras such as new equipment and wifi.

We also boost the parks ability to have programs for the community by recruiting a dedicated staff of volunteers and members that provide thousands of volunteer hours annually for basic park services and enrichment programs.

Many people don’t realize that Lovers Key State Park is the 2nd most visited park in the state park system with over 1 million visitors per year. The Park Service’s annual estimates have shown that 74% of visitors are non-local, the park generates over $98 million in economic impact and $6 million in tourism tax revenue for the region, which supports over 1,500 jobs.

Because of this, FOLKS and the Park Service are currently working on a partnership to construct the first visitor center in a state park in 20 years. The state will begin building a $4 million dollar visitor center and FOLKS is funding the interior improvements, which include a state-of-the-art environmental education exhibit, community meeting room and multimedia classroom. The 4,000 square foot building will be called The Welcome & Discovery Center.

The exhibit is being fabricated by noted design studio, Split Rock Studios in Minnesota, which also designed the exhibit at Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge. Exhibit themes include learning respect for healthy shoreline habitats and limits to development; teaching stewardship of the estuary, gulf and shoreline; and fostering a connection between visitors, the environment and species that call this area home. Visitors of all ages will be learn through the use of traditional walks and talks about nature, interactive presentations, tactile areas for young learners and the latest technology.

We are also working to create education links in our exhibits to wildlife organizations, seagrass/ oyster bed replenishment programs and other environmental groups so that visitors who are inspired to learn more will have easy access to information and support the cause.

The community meeting/classroom space will feature multimedia areas for lectures, indoor/outdoor classrooms, and mobile exhibit walls for community art and learning programs. The community space will be an excellent place for lectures and gatherings.

The building will be completed in 2020.

FOLKS is looking forward to sharing Lover’s Key with you!
