Background:
Friends of Lovers Key (FOLKS) is a Citizen Support Organization (CSO) that directly supports the mission of Lovers Key State Park (LKSP). We are a 501(c)3 organization that is authorized to raise funds in support of the parks objectives through donations, grants and sales of merchandise.
Many people don’t realize that Lovers Key State Park is the 2nd most visited park in the state park system with over 1 million visitors per year. The Park Service’s annual estimates have shown that 74% of visitors are non-local, the park generates over $98 million in economic impact and $6 million in tourism tax revenue for the region, which supports over 1,500 jobs.
Because of this, FOLKS and the Park Service are currently working on a partnership to construct the first visitor center in a state park in 20 years. The state will begin building a $4 million dollar visitor center and FOLKS is funding the interior improvements, which include a state-of-the-art environmental education exhibit, community meeting room and multimedia classroom. The 4,000 square foot building will be called The Welcome & Discovery Center.
We are also working to create education links in our exhibits to wildlife organizations, seagrass/ oyster bed replenishment programs and other environmental groups so that visitors who are inspired to learn more will have easy access to information and support the cause.
The community meeting/classroom space will feature multimedia areas for lectures, indoor/outdoor classrooms, and mobile exhibit walls for community art and learning programs. The community space will be an excellent place for lectures and gatherings.
The building will be completed in 2020.
FOLKS is looking forward to sharing Lover’s Key with you!
