Announcement: New at Dorcas International!

Immerse yourself in an exciting new initiative here at Dorcas International – our Global Classroom. Register now to learn Meditation, Basic Spanish, Middle Eastern cooking, and African drumming!

Imagine having the opportunity to be taught by inspirational and passionate instructors who are sharing the traditions and cultures of their homelands.

Classes begin early April and meet for an hour a week for eight weeks. Spaces are limited – so don’t wait! Join our Global Classroom today!

Courses offered this April 2019


Meditation

Master Buddhist monks will teach you meditation

WHEN: Every Saturday (April 20 - June 8, 2019)
TIME: 9 – 10 a.m.
WHERE: Dorcas International – South Campus (645 Elmwood Ave., Providence RI 02907)
COST: $100 for 8 Lessons

Imagine learning the principles of Buddhist Meditation through this unique opportunity. Join Master Rothana, Master Sokvoong and Master Puoh, Cambodian monks who have been practicing for more than 20 years in their monastery in Cambodia. They recently arrived to Providence and are currently studying English at Dorcas International.

No previous experience necessary.
Please bring your own mat.
Wear modest clothes that are preferably light in color.

A Khmer/English Interpreter will be present.


Spanish Language

Jhon Cardona will teach you to speak beginner level Spanish

WHEN: Every Thursday (April 11 - May 30, 2019)
TIME: 7 – 8 p.m.
WHERE: Dorcas International – North Campus (220 Elmwood Ave., Providence RI 02907)
COST: $100 for 8 Lessons

Whether you plan to travel or just want to speak with your neighbor, here is your chance to learn the basics of Spanish so that you can feel confident in your ability to communicate. In this 8-week course, you will start building a vocabulary and an understanding of the most commonly spoken foreign language in RI.

Jhon Cardona is originally from Medellin, Colombia, where he taught English and also received a Master’s in Communications. He moved to Rhode Island this past year in order to be reunited with his family and is now one of our ESL teachers at Dorcas International.

No experience necessary.


Middle Eastern Cooking

Discover with Chef Nastaran the delights of Persian cooking

WHEN: Every Saturday (April 13 - June 1, 2019)
TIME: 10:30 – 11:30 a.m.
WHERE: Dorcas International – South Campus (645 Elmwood Ave., Providence RI 02907)
COST: $100 for 8 Lessons

Chef Nastaran learned the secrets of Persian cooking on the knees of her mother and grandmother in Iran. These renowned recipes trace their roots to the Silk Road with Far East and Middle Eastern ingredients mixed with Mediterranean flavors. Evocative dishes made with saffron, olives and pomegranate paste are sure to inspire.

Nastaran has been living in the US for the past 20 years and showcasing her cooking skills by catering events and private functions. Learn the secrets of her recipes from home as well as experience the hospitality that is legendary in Middle Eastern cultures.

No experience necessary.


African Drumming

Learn African drumming from acclaimed Malian musician Sidy Maiga

WHEN: Every Wednesday (April 10 - May 29, 2019)
TIME: 7 – 8 p.m.
WHERE: Dorcas International – South Campus (645 Elmwood Ave., Providence RI 02907)
COST: $100 for 8 Lessons

Don’t miss the opportunity to learn djembe and dundun drumming from Sidy Maiga, a master drummer and internationally recognized professional musician from Mali, West Africa. He is the winner of multiple prestigious music awards ad fellowships and performs regularly in the US and internationally.

Sidy moved to RI in 2006, and since then he has loved to share his culture with us and produces an annual West African Dance and Drumming Festival. He is a former graduate of Dorcas International and is currently completing his degree at Berklee College of Music in Boston.

Drums are available for rent. No experience necessary.
