Seminar Description
Michigan will use a new building code; don’t be caught designing to an outdated code. The Bureau of Construction Codes current expected adoption date is September 26, 2014. The new requirements in the 2012 MBC are extensive; over 160 changes covering nine different chapters, but not limited to, safety glazing, means of egress, and fire sprinkler systems. The significant differences between the current 2009 edition of the MBC and the new 2012 version will be presented by Mr. Jay Woodward of the International Code Council at the San Marino Club in Troy, Michigan. Attendees will receive free ICC workbooks detailing the changes in the new code; lunch is included. Mr. Woodward is based in the ICC offices in Lenexa, Kansas. He has over a quarter‐century of experience with building design and construction, code enforcement and building code training seminars. At the seminar mid‐break, Mr. Ben Tiseo of the Michigan Government Affairs Committee will explain the new Michigan requirement for mandatory continuing education.

Jay Woodward, Representative of ICC (International Code Council)
Jay Woodward is a senior staff architect with ICC’s Business and Product Development department and works out of the Lenexa, Kansas Distribution Center. His current responsibilities include serving as the Secretariat for the ICC A117.1 standard committee and the development of new ICC publications. With more than 25 years of experience in building design, construction, code enforcement and instruction, Jay’s experience provides him with the ability to communicate effectively on issues of code application and design for code enforcement personnel as well as architects and designers. Jay has previously served as the secretariat for ICC’s Energy Conservation Code and the International Building Code’s Fire Safety Code Development committee.
Ben Tiseo, FAIA, NCARB
Benedetto (Ben) Tiseo, FAIA, NCARB, has had his own architectural practice since 1980, when he was first licensed. That same year Ben started his architectural teaching career at Lawrence Technological University in Southfield Michigan, his old alma mater and he is still teaching to this day. Ben started AIA Michigan’s Government Advocacy movement and is still the driving force in that arena. He teaches advocacy and disseminates his program to others which has benefited architects at state and national levels. Early on in Ben’s career he began to appreciate the increasing complexity of ways to get involved effectively for the common good that impacted architectural practice. Ben realized that the architect’s participation is essential in the political and regulatory environment. As a consequence of Ben’s efforts, AIA Michigan has become an effective political force.
