Event Details

The Filipino term bayanihan refers to a spirit of communal unity or effort to achieve a common goal. The Bayanihan: Coming Together To Build Successful Pathways in Engineering conference is appropriately named as it’s main objective is to bring together Filipino students from UH Manoa, UH Community Colleges, and Hawaii high schools to address the issues that Filipino students face when pursuing an education in Engineering. Although Filipinos are the largest asian group in the State of Hawaii and the second largest ethnic group in the State of Hawaii, this does not necessarily translate to enrollment and degrees awarded to Filipinos within the College of Engineering. The secondary objective of the conference is to use what is discussed as a catalyst in the formation of a registered independent organization (RIO) dedicated to increasing the advancement of Filipino students in the field of Engineering.

The Bayanihan: Coming Together To Build Successful Pathways in Engineering conference will take place at Campus Center on March 2, 2013. The program includes guest speakers, break out workshop sessions, cultural entertainment, panel discussions, and lab tours. The featured speaker will be Gene Albano, President of WSP Group, a global design, engineering and management consultancy. Emphasizing academic success, professional development, and cultural discovery the breakout workshop sessions will feature resources on campus such as Student Support Services and Manoa Career Center.
