Event description
A Self-Guided Woody Walk in the Heartland of Marcuse & Remmel

About this Event

This completely self-guided walking tour highlights the richness of architecture in the Bay Station Heritage Area of Alameda, California. It is an especially interesting area for the many residences designed and built by the firm Marcuse & Remmel. The tour is part of the education mission of the Alameda Architectural Preservation Society, and serves as the annual fundraiser for the organization in this pandemic year.

With a reservation - you will be able to receive a smartphone/tablet app from the Apple Store or Google Play that contains the tour, with the narration, or a link to a download PDF file of the tour booklet without the narration. As our annual docent guided home tour usually costs $40 per person, we are suggesting a donation of $20 for this self-guided walking tour. It is full of historical information that you cannot obtain anywhere else. Please note - the app can be downloaded to different devices in your family group as long as you use the same email as on the order. Only one ticket per family group is necessary. You can make a donation in any amount you feel is fair.

For those without technical options, a printed tour booklet will be sold for contactless porch pickup for an additional fee to cover printing costs.

The app and the downloadable materials will be released at 5:00 pm September 26, so that you can download and be ready for Opening Day of the tour at 10:00 am September 27. They will be available on the site through October 26.

The tour features narration by local Alameda historian Woodruff Minor and author Judith Lynch, and also a chat with homeowners of one of the stops on the tour. Even without physically walking the tour, there is a lot of information about Alameda architecture that available through the narration and pictures of each narrated stop. People from all over the world are welcome to use this app without actually walking it for an architectural history lesson of the area.

Thank you to our Premier Sponsor, Alameda Municipal Power, for funding the startup costs for the smartphone/ tablet app. We could not have done it without you!
