Great strides have been made in the requirements of the most recent California Model Water Efficient Landscape Ordinance (CA WELO) broadening the intent of the CA WELO from water use efficiency to include a comprehensive approach to sustainable landscaping. The Bay-Friendly Rating System brings with it training, tools and enforcement of CA WELO practices, guaranteeing the state bar is being implemented for every Bay-Friendly Rated project.

Why Become a Bay-Friendly Rater?
Bay-Friendly Qualified Raters are certified to verify that the design and construction of a new or renovated landscape meets the requirements of the Bay-Friendly Scorecard. Bay-Friendly Raters gain a marketing edge with their clients as experts on the Bay-Friendly Rating Program. Using the Bay-Friendly Rated Landscape System provides a clear a quantifiable path to healthier landscapes that meet or exceed CA WELO.
This training program is taught by Bay-Friendly staff, current Bay-Friendly Raters and members of the Bay-Friendly Rater's Council. To become a Bay-Friendly Rater, program participants must hold an active status as a Bay-Friendly Qualified Professional (BFQP) and attend both sessions of the training.
If you are a BFQP who has a Qualification that has lapsed and is no longer active, you may renew your Qualification prior to the Rater Training. Visit the ReScape CA website to learn how to renew or contact Arielle Conway at email@example.com.
Classes meet the following dates and times (times subject to change slightly):
- Wednesday, May 3, 2017 – 8:00am to 4:30pm
- Thursday, May 4, 2017 – 8:00am to 4:30pm
The course provides landscape design professionals with:
- An overview of the Bay-Friendly Rating System
- An understanding of the Bay-Friendly Scorecard and it's use in assessing Bay-Friendly landscapes
- The tools and resources to successfully rate Bay-Friendly landscapes
- A competitive advantage in the professional landscape design marketplace
- A certificate of qualification and use of the Bay-Friendly Raters logo
- A two-year membership in the Bay-Friendly Qualified Professionals network, which includes free listing in the Bay-Area-wide directory of Bay-Friendly Qualified Landscape Professionals
In order to recive your Rater Qualification, you must:
- Attend both days of the Rater Training
- Pass the final test (available online after the Rater Training)
UPDATES HAVE BEEN MADE TO THE BAY-FRIENDLY RATING SYSTEM!
This rater training course will review the updated version of the Bay-Friendly Scorecard which has been aligned with the California Model Water Efficient Landscape Ordinance (MWELO). The Bay-Friendly Rating system has also been updated to provide greater opportunities to crate Bay-Friendly Rated Landscapes by allowing both third-party and in-house rating. This rater training will review these and other changes to the Bay-Friendly Rating System.
In order to maintain your Rater Qualification, you must do the following:
- Attend both days of the Rater Training and pass the final test (which will be made available online)
- Register to receive a hardcopy of the materials and pass the final test (which will be made available online)
There is a discount offered to current Raters to attend the training. Contact Arielle Conway at firstname.lastname@example.org to receive the discount code. Current Raters wishing to not attend the training and only receive the materials and take the final test wil still need to register through the Eventbrite page and can contact Arielle Conway at email@example.com to receive the registration code.

Professional Training Policies and Procedures
ReScape CA staff dedicates a lot of time, energy, attention and personalization in to each training session. Often spaces are limited and fill up quickly. Because of these factors, cancellations, missed sessions, and late arrivals are treated very seriously. The handling of a refund, transfer, substitution, or missed or late session is governed by the following:
ReScape CA offers 80% refunds for cancellations of registration more than 4 weeks prior to the start date of the training. No refund will be given for cancellation of registration less than 4 weeks prior to the start date of training. All cancellations must be done by email and received within the timeframe outlined above.
To avoid forfeiture of your registration fee, you may transfer your registration to a future training event one time within the same calendar year at no additional cost. You must notify our office of your intent to transfer your registration 1 week prior to the start date of the training.
To avoid forfeiture of your registration fee, you may request substitution of a qualified co-worker or colleague to take your place in the training up to 1 week prior to the start date. Substitution made within 1 week of, including on the start date of the training, will incur a $50 processing fee. No substitution will be permitted after the start date of the training.
MISSED SESSION MAKEUP
Graduation for the training as a Bay-Friendly Rater requires attendance at all sessions as well as successful completion of the homework and practicum. You may request makeup of 1 missed training session by notifying our office and paying a $50 processing fee. Upon payment of the processing fee, our office will instruct you on the next available training for making up the session missed. Upon makeup of the missed session, our office will issue your Bay-Friendly Rater credential.
Note – Makeup of only 1 session is permitted. Forfeiture of your full registration fee will result if more than 1 session is missed.
Please note that Rater Trainings are held infrequently. It is highly recommended that you not miss either of the training sessions as a make up date may be delayed for a significant amount of time.
If you arrive late to a session more than half an hour after the start time, that session is treated as a missed session. You will be required to make-up the session as per the Missed Session Makeup Policy outlined above.
WAIVER OF LIABILITY
By registering for this training, you agree that they will not hold ReScape CA, or its project partners, liable for any injuries they may receive while participating in the training, even if you believe that ReScape CA, or its partners, has been negligent in any manner or has breached any claimed agreement. By registering for this training you acknowledge that you are voluntarily assuming all risks of participation in any project and shall not hold ReScape CA, or its partners, responsible for any consequences of same.
USE OF PHOTOS
Registrants understand that photographs collected during the training may be used by ReScape CA, or its partners, on websites, brochures and other promotional materials.
