What is electrification?

It’s switching from fossil fuels to clean electricity for transportation, cooking, water heating, space-heating and drying clothes. Electrification is critical for California to reach its climate goals. Electrification makes it easier for homes to become zero net carbon (ZNC). A zero net carbon building is designed to meet all its energy needs from carbon-free sources such as solar or wind. Watch this 2-minute video below and visit to learn more about ZNC buildings.

How does this expo connect to Climate Smart San José, the City of San José's plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and save water?

Transitioning towards a renewable energy future and creating an energy-efficient residential building stock are key elements of Climate Smart San José. Electrifying homes can help residents reduce energy use and emissions to support healthy, climate smart communities.

What programs does San Jose have to electrify or make my home ZNC?

  1. Electrify San José – receive up to $6,000 in rebates to replace your natural gas water heater with an electric heat pump water heater. For more info, visit
  2. Induction Cooktop Checkout - test the benefits of induction by checking out a portable induction cooktop and cookware for up to 2 weeks for free. For more info, visit
  3. San Jose Clean Energy - sign up for 100% carbon-free electricity with TotalGreen. For more info, visit
