Description

Battle Of Saint Lo - Panzer Lehr Counterattack

Theme: July 1944 - In advance of Operation Cobra the Allies have made preliminary attacks on a number of strategic positions vital to the eventual assault on the key city of St. Lo. After weeks of fierce fighting British and Canadian forces have finally taken Caen. Elements of American airborne and infantry divisions have advanced down the Carentan-St. Jean de Daye-St. Lo highway and secured the crucial town of St. Jean de Daye, the crossroads near La Perrine as well as the bridge over the Vire River outside St. Fromond. Unbeknownst to the Allies, the Panzer Lehr Division is preparing a counterattack, intending to re-take Cavigny, St. Fromond and St. Jean de Daye. Their plan is to destroy the Vire River bridgehead south of the Vire-Taute canal, thus eliminating the most direct and immediate threat to St. Lo.
