Event Details

News informs the public so that it is prepared to participate in and sustain civil society. The ability of established news media to serve this function, however, has been compromised by dwindling newsroom staff and the continuing high cost of newsgathering. This crisis in the news industry has in turn threatened the ability of think tanks, academia, advocacy organizations and other civil society institutions to keep the public spotlight on their issues. Some have responded by using the Internet to establish their own communications channels directly to the public. Others are learning how to package information and share resources to support journalism directly related to their work. What is this emerging news environment and where is it going? What are the advantages and/or dangers? How are today’s journalists contributing to this process? And what role can or should “save journalism” forces play in this growing trend?

Moderator: Suzanne Turner, President, Turner Strategies

  • Kimberly Abbott, Communications Director, North America, International Crisis Group
  • Jonathan Aiken, Director of Media Relations, American Red Cross
  • Wendy Harman, Social Media Manager, American Red Cross
  • Kira Marchenese, Online Communications Director, Environmental Defense Fund

The rise of the Internet has profoundly changed public behavior, complicating how the public receives, consumes and reacts to information. As media continues to evolve in unexpected and confounding ways, the greatest challenge for any organization dependent on information to advance its work is how to keep up. This is the first program in Turner Strategies' new high-level discussion series for public policy and advocacy organizations to explore topics and issues that help illuminate the digital landscape, and learn communications and advocacy strategies to navigate and thrive in a digital world.
