Batik: Enduring Art of Dyers in Indonesia
October 2018

Join Slow Fiber Studios this October for a series of events focusing on Javanese life and culture through the lens of its batik traditions.

There is a rhythm to life in Java reflective of the rhythm of its dance. The pace is slow, much slower than what we are used to in other parts of the world. There is ritual, and dance, and music, and with it – there is batik.

Batik touches on just about every aspect of Indonesian life. From the cloth a child is wrapped in when it is born to the clothing worn by Indonesian leaders at important gatherings, batik binds a proud nation to a long and cherished cultural identity.

Batik is truly “intangible”, as UNESCO proclaimed in 2009. It is part of our world heritage, the identity of an island nation, worthy of admiration and preservation.

According to UNESCO, “... batik reflects a wide diversity of patterns [and a] variety of influences, ranging from Arabic calligraphy, European bouquets and Chinese phoenixes, to Japanese cherry blossoms and Indian or Persian peacocks. Often handed down within families for generations, the craft of batik is intertwined with the cultural identity of the Indonesian people and, through the symbolic meanings of its colours and designs, expresses their creativity and spirituality.” [UNESCO, 2009]

Bu Dalmini is a master batik artisan and the Director of Batik Tulis Kebon Indah, a collective of 169 women batik makers in the village of Bayat near the famous 9th century Hindu temple of Prambanan in Central Java. Bu came to the United States last January for the first time to lead a talented group of textile enthusiasts in a batik workshop at The Language of Cloth studio in San Francisco. All aspects of traditional batik-making processes practiced in Java for centuries were covered, and participants were able to design and create their own batik works of art.

Batik is a wax resist process in which melted wax is applied to a cloth in a certain pattern or design, and then the cloth is immersed in a dye bath. When the wax is removed the areas that were covered have not taken up the dye and the pattern is revealed. The workshop offers the participants the experience of learning the batik process in the same way that young girls and boys learn it from their mothers in Java.
