Description

Bat, Mysterious and Misunderstood

Join wildlife advocate and award-winning author Rob Laidlaw for an illustrated talk about the world of bats. Explore the fantastic world of these mysterious and misunderstood creatures and learn about their diversity, habitats, lifestyles, adaptations, the threats they face and why bats are so critically important to the functioning of the natural world. A question and answer session will follow the talk.

Program begins at 6:00p.m.

Guests will have an hour to participate in a 'Book Walk' in the forest with 'Stellaluna', the story of a young fruit bat who loses her mother, but author Janell Cannon. Play 'Bat and Moth' and/or make and take your own bat box for an additional $20.00. Pieces are pre-cut, and all required equipment and guidance provided.

At 7:00 the presentation with Rob Laidlaw, author of Bat Citizens: Defending the Ninjas of the Night Silver Birch award. After some Q & A, Rob will lead us on a night hike with bat detectors.

The program will end around 8:30.

Rob Laidlaw

A intense lifelong interest in animals and nature led Rob Laidlaw to a career helping animals and the environment. Since 1984, as Executive Director of Zoocheck, a national wildlife protection charity he founded, Rob has been involved in a broad range of successful wildlife protection campaigns. His work has taken him from Canada’s north to tropical Asia and has involved legislative programs, litigations, public awareness initiatives, field projects, capacity building programs, as well as numerous rescues of animals as diverse as dogs, primates and elephants.

Rob is a Chartered Biologist, a former humane society inspector, and a past Project Manager for the World Society for the Protection of Animals. He is also the author of nine children’s books, multiple book chapters and numerous reports, briefs, articles and other materials. His books have won a number of awards, including the Ontario Library Association’s Silver Birch Non-Fiction Award and Hackmatack Children's Choice Book Award.

In 2014, Rob received the prestigious Frederic A. McGrand Lifetime Achievement Award for substantial contributions to animal welfare in Canada. He is a regular voice in local, regional and national media and has appeared on most major news programs across the country and in variety of documentary film productions. He regularly speaks to audiences ranging from young children to adults across Canada and abroad.
