Basic Mixed Media Prep 101: Art Journaling – Conquering the Blank Page
is an immersive workshop.
It provides adults with an introduction to mixed media art through
a fast-paced, intensive 6 hour experience for exploring various media and multiple
techniques. Students will learn and apply the elements and principles of design to
produce creative art journals that reflect their understanding of these design concepts.
Students will gain an understanding of several art media, several art techniques and learn
how to use them in their journals at home - and ‘on the go’.
Time: SESSION A 1:30 PM - 4:30 PM on Sat, Jul 22, 2017
Time: SESSION B 5:30 PM - 8:30 PM on Sat, Jul 22, 2017
Time: OPEN TIME 8:30 PM - 11:30 PM on Sat, Jul 22, 2017 (optional)
Note: Open / Play Time is only available with registration of Workshop sessions.
Clock Hours: 6 hours + optional 3 hours Open / Play time (optional) - for possible 9 hours
Doors Open: for Student Setup: 1:00 PM - 1:15 PM
Workshop Begins: 1:30 PM
Doors Close: 8:30 PM, after Students clean up / pack up (if not taking OPEN TIME)
Doors Close: after optional Open Time: 12 AM, after cleanup / pack up at 11:30 PM
Supplies provided: Most art materials, supplies and tools needed to make AJs will be provided.
Supplies to Bring: Matte medium (smallest jar), white gesso (smallest jar), paper towel roll.
Pen and notebook. Apron, or wear old clothes.
What is Included: Snacks, chocolate, bottled water.
What else to bring: Cash (optional) to order out your dinner, or to dine out.
Breaks: Dinner break will be about 4:30pm-ish.

Session A workshop session features:
Overviews – Supplies, Glossary of Terms
introduction to the integration of media
demo of the following art techniques: hands-on participation for each technique presented
frottage, collage, under-journaling, resists, glazing, masks, stenciling
clear philosophical rationales, with examples displayed from the Teaching Artist’s art journals
Session B workshop session will focus on:
embellishments (journal spots, tuck spots, rub-ons, and more, time permitting)
demo of art techniques; tangling (i.e. doodling), art lettering, AJ calligraphy, time permitting
writing in the Students’ art journal
‘Round Robin’ journal swap game (when multiple students enrolled)
‘Show and Tell’ (when multiple students enrolled)
sample of Art Journaling ‘GO BAG’ - plus how to stock & pack bag with small containers
exchange contact info (optional), pose for Group Photo (when multiple students enrolled) (if not staying for (optional) Open / Play Time
Open / Play Time – Optional
For all sessions, Students will:
have access to samples of original art journals from the Teaching Artist’s collection
have Access to art journaling books from The SPlayce library
stretch to loosen up arms / fingers, and occasionally use their non-dominant hand
think outside of the box when solving artistic challenges or problems
apply techniques creatively, and mix techniques randomly.
Expectations of Students:
The goal of this mini camp is for each Student to initiate an original art journal (AJ) by applying the knowledge and techniques learned in this workshop to selected pages.
Each Student’s journal will be unique - it will display the Student's own preferences – therefore, each AJ will be different.
Attend both workshop sessions, review sample AJs, optional (complete optional Open / Play Time), and complete all workshop activities.
