Event description

Our Self-Defense Sunday Workshops are a basic introduction to hand-to-hand defenses and non-lethal weapons. In our interactive 90-minute workshop, we will go over basic strikes and combinations along with non-lethal weapons like stun guns, pepper spray, and pressure point tools. If you've always wanted to take self-defense, our basic workshop is a good place to start. For the comfort of our attendees, this is a women-only class, we always have a rape crisis advocate on site to assist.

Be a part of this important and informative class. Register today!

Your donations help us keep our Sunday self-defense workshops for the girls and women of our community free of charge. From all us at Out of Harm’s Way, thank you for your continued support.

What is Out Of Harm's Way? Who am I donating to?

We are a collaboration of women with backgrounds in self-defense and advocacy. Our goal is to centralize resources and bring personal safety education to our communities. Your donation helps support the effort to raise awareness about violence against women and to offer solutions for a safer community. Find out more at

What do you mean by "basic"?

In our class you will get a basic but interactive overview of self-defense. As you can imagine, 90 minutes is not a lot of time to go over what takes years to learn. So we have taken the most important pieces of stand-up defenses and put them into a short beginning course. We will not cover ground defenses or defenses against weapons. But you will get a solid foundation to build on and tactics that are organic and uncomplicated for general defense.

How can I get a more expansive class?

We do teach longer classes that are more detailed, customizable, and work around your schedule. You can find information for our programs at

Is there a minimum age requirement for the class?

Yes. We HIGHLY suggest your child be at least 14-15 years old since the topics we discuss are mature and can include mentions of rape, date rape, domestic abuse, and more. There is always a rape crisis counselor on site for support and assistance with resources.

What should I bring to the class?

Dress comfortably, you will be moving around. Shoes are not permitted on the carpet but feel free to use socks if you aren't comfortable bare foot. Storage area is limited, so please plan to travel light. We respectfully ask that you remove your jewelry and watches as well, for your safety and that of your partners.

Can boys or men attend?

At this time, this is a female-only event. We are working on a program for boys and men in our communities. Our goal is to launch it in 2018.

Can I attend if I'm injured?

YES! In the case of serious injury, we strongly suggest that you are cleared by your doctor. Generally, injuries can be worked around, we will help you modify moves. Please be sure to wear any supports or items that you may need like braces, canes, etc.

How can I contact the organizer with any questions?

Contact Karla Bravo at or call 714-603-4983
