Description

Enjoy an interactive, fun and fact-filled 2 hour field session designed to prepare you for success in your study of Colorado's flora. Participants will be exposed to basic botanical taxonomy and ecology as we get a close-up look at plant parts, discover botanical terminology and identifying characteristics, all to set you up for success in the field.

Trainer: Mariska Hamstra has a background in chemistry but has grown a passion for Colorado's native flora since moving here from the Netherlands in 1998. She's taken many plant-related classes at RRCC and MSCD, including field botany and vascular plant taxonomy and is a certfied Native Plant Master.

Required Text: Colorado Flora - Eastern Slope, Fourth edition, Weber and Wittmann available through Colorado Native Plant Society bookstore (https://conps.org/conps-store), local and online retail outlets and the publisher (800-621-2736).

When/Where to meet: William Frederick Hayden Park at the Florida Trailhead (this is the big parking lot of off Alameda opposite Florida Drive)

What to bring: Textbook, paper, pencil, hand lens (approximately 10x). The textbook and hand lens can be purchased through the Colorado Native Plant Society (https://conps.org/conps-store) or any on-line or local bookstore.

Native Plant Master: This class does not count towards Colorado Flora Certificate or certification as a Native Plant Master. To learn more, click here.

Inclement Weather/Illness: In the rare circumstance that this class must be cancelled, you will be notified by phone and/or email message as soon as possible by the instructor. In case of cancellation, the make-up day for this field session is May 19.
