Event description

Description

This program explores the largely untapped wealth of 17th century music for voices set to the simple accompaniment of two violins with harpsichord, organ, and cello. Featuring works by Isabella Leonarda, a nun from Novara, Italy, who wrote sacred music as well as instrumental sonatas, and Salomone Rossi, a Jewish violinist and composer from Venice who worked as a court musician in Mantua. Also includes works by Monteverdi, Buxtehude, and Schütz. All these composers cultivated the combination of voices and violins in which the sonorous qualities of the human voice and strings are entwined.
