Event description

Description

New Ulm is known for its volunteers, but seldom is there a couple who have had as much of an impact on so many organizations as did Barb and Bruce Fenske! In appreciation of their many efforts, five New Ulm non-profits are sponsoring a tribute Saturday, November 11, 2017, commencing at 5:30 pm, at the State Street Theater. The evening will consist of a social hour featuring appetizers catered by Gutes Essen, a cash beer and wine bar, and donated gourmet cupcakes. A special video featuring a collage of photos of the Fenskes, their families, and their community activities will be a feature of the evening. A good friend of the Fenskes, Crista Bohlmann, is donating her talents for the evening festivities, bringing in the Hootenanny Annies for the musical enjoyment of guests. The children, siblings and other relatives of Bruce and Barb will be guests of the sponsors.

Each of the host organizations experienced the contributions of Bruce and/or Barb over the years: Barb served on the task force whose efforts resulted in the formation of the ISD 88 Foundation. Bruce was an early supporter of that initiative. Barb’s teaching career with ISD 88 spanned 35 years, during which time she was key in establishing the Gifted and Talented program. At the time of his death, Bruce was involved with others of the hosts. He was on the board of the New Ulm Area Foundation and was a key fundraiser for them during their “Match” campaign. Given Barb’s long and courageous bout with cancer, the New Ulm Medical Center and particularly the Virginia Piper Cancer Institute played a key role in their lives. They were friends of the foundation, Bruce hosting one of the social hours for its gala event the last few years, something he always looked forward to. Shortly after Barb’s passing, Bruce was recruited to the Oak Hills Memorial Foundation Board, and after just one year, became its president and Chair. There, he could be counted on to help with their two significant fund-raisers each year. And finally, as a board member and investor, Bruce played a significant role in the purchase of the former ISD 88 Administration Building, its subsequent sale to a developer and the gifting of the theater to State Street Theater Co. He did so because Barb had long had an interest in community theater, even playing the role of Sr. Amnesia in Nunsense among other musical efforts, and because four generations of the Fenske family had walked the halls of that campus. Again at the time of his death, Bruce was the co-chair of the Theater’s Capital Campaign Cabinet, helping with fund-raising for the ultimate improvements to the building, knowing that doing so will help restore the theater to the gem it is. Bruce’s career with the newspaper industry was a lifelong love, including a stint on the board and as chair of the Minnesota Newspaper Association. They were a joy to their neighbors, active members and leaders at United Church of Christ, the Sisters Cities program, Jr. Pioneers, New Ulm Club, and other groups.

Cost is $25 per person. The amount is not meant as a fund-raiser, but simply to cover costs in recognizing a deserving couple. Tickets can be obtained online at statestreetnewulm.org; at the Chamber of Commerce office; or by mail to Fenske Tribute Event, PO Box 493, New Ulm, MN 56073. Checks can be made payable to SSTC-Fenske Tribute. Due to limited seating, there will be no tickets for sale at the door.
